Herald Cancer Care Network
Bereavement Teleconference Seminars (in Mandarin) for Chinese American Caregivers

Chinese Americans with limited English proficiency who have lost their loved ones tend to be reluctant to seek bereavement support. Culturally, they are not used to publicly expressing their feelings, let alone in an unfamiliar language. Moreover, the existing main stream’s approaches for grief support may not be entirely culturally acceptable for this group of people.

To address the specific needs of this underserved population, Herald Cancer Care Network with the support of several community organizations (listed below), will present a series of six weekly, 1-hour bereavement educational seminars for Chinese Americans. The educational seminars will be presented in Mandarin by teleconference to callers in the privacy of their own homes. This program is totally free of charge for the participants.

Home/hospital visits
Requests for home/hospital visits in the Bay Area may be made by calling HCCN office at 1-888-663-8585. The request must be made by the patient or with the patient’s consent. We’ll call the patient for a telephone interview to better understand the needs so that we can select an appropriate volunteer to visit.

Our volunteers are strictly instructed not to give unauthorized medical advice, or promote any products or nutritional supplements or any other merchandise.

National Hotline Telephone Care
Since 2011, HCCN has established a National Hotline Telephone Care program for Chinese cancer patients and caregivers in the US. The program consists of Mandarin, Cantonese, and Taiwanese-speaking volunteers who are trained in empathetic listening and caring skills, and are equipped to be sensitive to the caller’s cultural, language, social, and religious backgrounds. Through compassionate listening and support, these volunteers care for Chinese cancer patients and their family through the difficult time of their cancer journeys to lift their spirit and give them the gift of hope. If you or your friends are in the need of support, please dial 1-888-663-8585 between 9 am and 5 pm (Pacific Time), Monday through Friday, to speak to our hotline volunteers.
